Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for inquiring about the MSU Youth Horsemanship School 2008.

STUDENT:INSTRUCTOR RATIO:

In order to keep the student to instructor ratio low, the students will be divided into 4 groups and rotated through riding sessions and workshops. This will also allow each group the maximum arena time, space and individual attention. Riding sessions are tailored to each group of students. Students’ skill levels, age groups and abilities are assessed the first day, and then divided into four groups. From that point on, the group’s instructors and students will determine what horsemanship skills they need to focus on.

SCHEDULE:

We do not have a set “schedule” of topics put together at this time. The general schedule will be: a 1 ½ hour riding session and a 1 ½ hour demonstration or workshop each morning and afternoon. Sack lunches are delivered to the pavilion so that everyone may eat together. Following dinner at the dining hall, evening activities will be planned from 6-8 pm. Be aware that everything is tentative at this time, and the schedule is subject to change as the need arises.

DEMONSTRATIONS:

Previous workshop topics have included: safety, roping, first aid and vet care, showing & grooming, ground work, trail riding/obstacles, rodeo events, and more.

RIDING SESSIONS:

Riding sessions are tailored to each group of students. Students’ skill levels, age groups and abilities are assessed the first evening, and then the instructors tailor the camp to their needs. The students will be split into as many as four riding groups based on their knowledge, skills and abilities. From that point on, the group’s instructors and students will determine what horsemanship skills they need to focus on.

EVENING ACTIVITIES:

Evening activities may include riding games and other horseback sessions. In response to suggestions for more “free” time or “non-horse” evening activities, we are currently working on a couple of options that include swimming, and a pizza night. Activities will end by 8 pm each evening, leaving time for the students to care for their horses.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

Only the first 50 students will be admitted to the 2008 Youth Horsemanship School. Because of the popularity of the School, we anticipate filling up quickly. We advise that if you are interested in attending, to send in your application and registration fee as soon as possible. We can only register students with this fee, and cannot reserve spaces without it.
