AFO/CAFO definitions

Animal Feeding Operations (AFO)
An animal feeding operation (AFO) is defined as a facility where livestock are confined for 45 days or more in a year and where crops or vegetation are not sustained during the normal growing season.

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO)
CAFO is an area that meets the definition of an AFO and has equal to or more animals than a designated Large AFO or a Medium AFO with direct discharge or contact with state waters or a Small AFO that is designated a CAFO by EPA authority.
